What is straight-through processing (STP)?

Straight-through processing is the share of transactions a system completes end to end with no human intervention. It is the headline metric for document and workflow automation: a pipeline at 80% STP handles four of five items automatically and routes the fifth to a person.

STP is a more honest measure of automation value than accuracy alone. A system can be 99% accurate per field and still have low STP, because a document with twenty fields needs every one of them right to pass through untouched.

It is also the number that converts directly into cost. Moving from 60% to 85% STP means the review queue shrinks by well over half, which is usually where the labour saving in an automation programme actually comes from.
